I would like to nominate my husband, Robert Cullen, for the Campbell’s Chunky MVC. In 1996, after graduating from Minot State University, we moved to Idaho. Robert took a position as a Special Needs Teacher and volunteered to help coach the high school football team and the middle years boys basketball and track teams. He coached from 1996 to 2001. We returned to Brandon in 2001 and Robert began teaching at Neelin High School. There was not a football program at Neelin, so he began coaching for his alma mater, the Crocus Plains High School football team. In 2002, Robert discovered a grassroots football program had been developed in Brandon and he immediately signed up to coach. He continues to coach in the Westman Youth Football Association and led his Pee Wee team to a championship this past season. Positive reinforcement is the foundation of his coaching philosophy. Players respect his knowledge for the game and his passion for coaching. He is also the Commissioner of the WYFA. Under his guidance and dedication, the WYFA has grown from 50 kids to 300+ registrations for the 2009 season. In 2003, Robert approached administrators at Neelin and suggested that they should bring a football team to Neelin. The administration disagreed, so he continued coaching at Crocus. In 2005, Neelin administrators changed their minds and decided to revive the Neelin football program. Robert was thrilled and began the process of developing a football program. Unfortunately, their record was a dismal 0-12. However, the character of the team was epitomized by a comment made by a grade 12 player after their final game. He said “Hey Coach! Congratulations on a perfect season!” Coach replied, “What are you talking about?” To which the player said, “Our perfect season of course, 0 for 12!” The players didn’t care that they had not won a single game. All they cared about was playing football. That’s a direct reflection of the kind of coaching they received. And while the team has improved significantly over the last 5 years, the character of the team remains. Coach Cullen teaches his players to lose with dignity and win with grace. Respect and sportsmanship are expected out of everyone and exemplified by Coach Cullen. Robert also coaches the under 17 provincial team. Tryouts and practices are held in Winnipeg. He makes the trip back and forth, several times a week during the spring. If any players from Brandon need a ride, Robert will take them. He never wants a player to miss an opportunity, so he’ll do whatever he can to help. Coach Cullen has received several awards for his dedication and commitment to football. He truly loves football and sees the positive impact that quality coaching can have on a player. Coach Cullen isn’t just developing football players, he’s helping guide these boys into becoming strong, confident and respectful men. And it is for that reason, I believe that Robert Cullen deserves to be Campbell’s Chunky MVC.

I gotta say, as a mom I hated the idea of my guys playing football and getting "crunched". Coach Cullen not only has coached my 2 boys but he has coached me with an education and understanding on how fun, strategic and safe this game really is. He didn't have to do that but he went that extra mile and has created a superb program for our community. Coach Cullen, helping kids and helping moms!

Coach Cullen has had a huge impact in my life. I help started the program at Neelin High in Brandon with him as a part of the first team. He helped restore the fundamentals of what being a coach really means. School and education are more important to him than even his best players playing on gameday. He cares more about the future of his players than he does winning and he definitely helped me improve a lot of my leadership skills and helped me be who I am today. He has been a huge impact on our community and he supports everything he can. He is the commisioner for our youth league in Brandon and has had a tremendous influence on everyone who has crossed his path. I hope he wins because I truly believe that he is the best coach and mentor in Canada and I want the world to know it!

The Brandon and Western Manitoba area football community will be forever indebted to the vision, efforts, leadership and contributions Coach Cullen has and continues to give to the game of football. 10 years ago, youth football was but a pipe dream in our city. Today, it is a flourishing league that has 6-8 teams in age divisions ranging from age 7-15 and it continues to grow, expand and get better with each successive year primarily because Rob has the energy, vision, knowledge and leadership to lead such an initiative. This year, Rob spearheaded a Peewee team that travelled to Winnipeg to play in their youth league, a 6 hour round trip every Saturday. The well established Winnipeg teams thought they'd have a cake walk over our team, and were more than surprised when our team went deep into the playoffs!! 5 years ago, Neelin high school did not have a football team. Today, this small High School not only has a program, but can compete at the highest level with any team in this province. And Coach Cullen's efforts are not confined to the grass roots and high schhol level, his knowledge and coaching ability, combined with his commitment to the game, enables him to hold the position of Provincial U17 Head Coach. It would be quite an acomplishment and honor for any coach to be named to this coaching staff, but to be named head coach speaks volumes of the mans knowledge, commitment and integrity. I honestly don't know where Rob gets the time to put into his football endeavours when a round trip to Winnipeg where the provincial team is based, is 6 hours, he does that at least 3 times a week during provincial teams, planning practicies, coaches meeting, you do the math, it is truly unbelievable!! And on top of that, he finds time to oversee and guide our youth league where he is a role model for all - parents, coaches, players. I have coached against Rob in the high school league for 5 years. You can count on a team coached by Coach Cullen to play hard, by the rules, be prepared mentally and phyiscally, throw trick plays at you on offense and speical teams, give it their all, and at the same time, conduct themselves in a very respectful honorable manner. I have also officiated youth league games for 4 years, and given that Coach is commissioner of the league, there is no wonder the code of conduct from players, parents and coaches involved in this league is truly exemplary and one to be proud of, play hard, play fair and play the game with integrity and respect - to your teammates, your coaches, parent, opponents and officials. To further raise the profile of football in our community, Brandon hosted a Junior football exhibition game this year, and guess who made that happen. And guess who was lining the fields, and serving up food in the concession, Coach Cullen. The man is truly amazing. He coaches kids from 7 to 17, from youth league, to the provincial team, does everything from line the fields, develop officials, coach youth, high school and provincial teams, officiate games when we're short a ref, be it in Brandon or out of town in the Rural Manitoba High School Football league. We as a football community will never be able to repay Coach for his efforts, contributions and positive impacts he has had on our football community, never, not even close. Congratulatoins Coach on your nomination, there is truly not a more deserving candidate in Canada!!
