“Coach Steve” has been coaching kid’s hockey for 5 years- and loves it. Steve coaches for all the right reasons- the kids! He is not in it for glamour or the pay – this is a volunteer position and he provides 150% commitment to his team. He does it because he loves it when his group of boys succeed. He is never prouder than the moments when he sees his boys succeed in achieving their goals, or the tough days when he succeeds in having a kid leave the team by moving up. Coach Steve works hard to make sure that his boys are well rounded. Schoolwork always comes first! Coach Steve has 3 kids of his own playing hockey, and yet chooses to devote additional time to being a Head Coach of a rep team, Coach of a Summer Lacrosse and 3on3 Hockey team and assist with both other sons’s teams. He is always the last to leave, and makes sure that everyone is taken care of before himself. He emphasizes respect in the dressing rooms, on the ice, on the bench and in the real world. How about some examples: He runs skills competitions for other age groups at Milton tournaments; His teams all run the Terry Fox Run every year; this past year his team did some fundraising and donated $200 in memory of a former teammates mother; wore a dress at practice for a big win; wore a wig for a big win; camping weekend; sitting a kid for falling behind at school; there is always an extra kid or two that gets a ride to the rink and back home; getting together to watch Team Canada and inviting another team to share in the event; taking the team to Teen Ranch before the Montreal Canadiens did it; he shaves his head if his team wins a tournament; yes BALD; encouraging kids to participate in other sports for their interest, heath and well being – triathlons, lacrosse, soccer – whatever interests them; he gives up overtime or regular hours at work to make sure he is there the team. This is just a taste- there are many more examples, and not a few pictures in the community paper to prove many of them. Coach Steve makes it his mission to make sure that his team is learning and getting better at hockey- but having fun doing it. He is also always working hard to be a better coach by taking extra courses or certifications to continue to develop his coaching skills. Coach Steve deserves recognition for all the hours he puts into things for everyone else when it would be so easy to let others do the job.
